I. Bible Passage(s)

You, my brothers (and sisters), were called to be free..., therefore serve one another in love as God gave you the freedom to do through the forgiveness of your sins (Galatians 5:13).

The freedom that Paul talks about in Galatians is the freedom given us by the work of Christ on the cross.  We are free from the Law, sin, death, and the wrath of God! Those who are forgiven much, love much (Luke 7:47).

Luther says, “Let everybody perform the duties of his station and vocation diligently and help his neighbor to the limit of his capacity (Luther’s Commentary on Galatians).” Serving one another in love is to instruct, comfort, lift up, and help one’s neighbor in every possible way, to bear with his infirmities and endure hardships in the world.  We are also encouraged to honor our parents, have patience at home – such excellent works that the world cannot possibly estimate their value.

II. Discussion

  1. We are in a season of economic hardship that affects our neighbors around the globe.  How has it affected your place of work? Co-workers?
  2. What does your employer need from you right now? Clients?
  3. How can you be the love of God in the duties of your station and vocation right now?
  4. How can you help your co-workers?

III. Connection

  1. Share the high points and low points of your week. Why do you see these as highs and lows?
    How are they impacting you
    r life right now?
  2. This week I want to thank God for...
  3. This week God is leading me to confess or grow in...

IV. Prayer & Praise

The prayer of the cross can be a helpful guide for prayer and praise. Simply picture a cross in your mind. Label the top of the cross “Praise and Adoration of God.” Label the base of the cross “Requests.” On the cross bar, label the left side “Confession;” and the right side “Thanks.” These four categories help us keep our prayers well rounded.

Many people make the sign of the cross when they pray. You might like to practice this prayer while making the sign of the cross. Touch your forehead and pray your praises and adoration of God. Touch your chest and pray any requests you may have. Touch your left shoulder and make any confessions the Spirit brings to mind. Touch your right shoulder and pray your thanks.

Remember that love is of value.  Love is seeking
and doing what is best for the other
